SJS Artistic Hands that are SJS Helping Hands

In keeping with Ojibwe custom and tradition,SJS students
will have the opportunity to connect with nature, through
learning how to create Woodland Art (first made world
famous by Red Lake local Resident Norval Morrisseau).
Then the student's will auction their finished art pieces
and purchase supplies (seeds, rakes, hoses, etc.) for the
volunteer ran Red Lake Municipality Community Gardens.
The Red Lake Municipality Community Gardens provide
food from their gardens to the Red Lake Homeless
Shelter and local Women's Shelter, which will help
clientele that utilize theses two particular community
service providers.

Hello All,

On March 19th, local Red Lake Artist Rhonda Bobinski-Beckman came into the grades 3/4 and 4/5 classrooms and provided a Woodland Arts lesson for all the students! She gave a brief overview of the ties Red Lake has with Norval Morrisseau (1931–2007) who is considered by many to be the Mishomis, or grandfather, of contemporary Indigenous art in Canada.

During the week of May 13th - 17th the students all created their own Woodland Art pieces that will be auctioned off in June. All the proceeds from the auction will go towards purchasing supplies (rakes, hoes, seeds, etc ...) to grow vegetables in our local community garden, which will help feed the clients at our local Women's Shelter and Homeless Shelter.

With a very busy May and June here at St. John School, we will be hosting our auction in the fall to coincide with our Parent/Teacher Meet and Greet Night. All the student's have completed a Woodland Art piece that will be placed up for auction, which all proceeds from the auction will go towards purchasing such things as hoes, racks, weed pickers, etc ... The things grown in the community garden will go to either the Red Lake Homeless Shelter or the Red Lake Women's Shelter in the proceeding year, as the gardens have already been planted for this Fall's harvent.
